Topic: Women in the Labor Force

Topic Summary

Continuously, society had the tendency to value men’s work over women’s, as well as negatively judging females for their so-called unusual career choices or for taking on a path that is defined to be “for men”. Starting from humanity’s first appearance on Earth to the present day, women’s rights have commonly been violated worldwide, especially in the labor force. Gender pay gaps, for instance, strongly undermine women’s daily efforts in comparison to men’s. Many of the working conditions and healthcare for women around the world are far less than ideal, such as with the numerous female workers who end up facing horrifyingly critical situations. Even natural privileges such as maternity leave are not provided properly to young women all around the globe;  there are countries who even refuse to provide such essential rights. These matters lead the world to often disregard the importance of gender equality and maintain a sexist society.

Although there have been several feminist figures who have spoken up about the unequal treatment in their labor context and have impacted society encouraging new actions and mishaps to be altered, it is crucial for all countries in UN Women to come up with solutions that will protect the rights of women in the labor force. These solutions, however, must respect and understand the various religious, cultural, social and economical situations of all countries in order to truly be viable. In this sense, the goal is to reach a solution that protects women’s rights without disregarding culture.
