Special Committee: Wakandan Crisis
Director: Luciana Goñi
Co-Director: Luis Eduardo Muñoz

Topic: Vibranium Trade & Usage

Topic Summary
Since the foundation of the Kingdom of Wakanda, there has been a long-established policy of isolation from external conflicts. The country is well-known for its self-sufficient economy based almost exclusively on the exploitation and management of vibranium. Wakanda’s practically inexhaustible stock of vibranium has led to the development of unimaginably advanced technology, which has been kept hidden from the rest of the world, thus making the country far superior compared to world powers like the United States and China. While there has been strict control as to how Wakanda exchanges its most valuable resource, over the years, individuals like Ulysses Klaue have participated in activities related to illegal trafficking of vibranium. The government-controlled restrictive sale of vibranium has caused the surge of black markets that sell the metal for billions, which has in turn led to the creation of weapons such as the genocidal android Ultron.
While some may argue that restrictive control is necessary to prevent the appropriation of vibranium by other countries, tensions have risen with the questioning of the current trade and isolation policies of the Kingdom. Individuals like N’Jadaka have challenged the country’s management of its assets, arguing that it is not morally correct to keep the advanced technology away from populations in need around the world, especially African and African-descendant people in need of asylum. We will address the different economic, social, and cultural implications of whether Wakanda should continue living in isolation or if the country should open and share its resources and technology with the rest of the international community.

Delegates are also expected to take the committee seriously despite the entertainment-related nature of the topic. Procedures need to be followed as they would in any other committee.
